The Amherstburg Karate Club (AKC) was started during the COVID-19 pandemic by Sensei Chad Waldron, Sensei Matthew Gholampoor, and Senpai Stefan Miller.
At the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, our local Meibukan Goju-Ryu Karate-do School had closed down, believed to be for safety reasons and government pandemic policies and restrictions. Training had come to a complete halt for all three of us until such time it was deemed safe to train together once again. Later in the year, Sensei Chad carried on with his training, leading the way for Sensei Matthew and Senpai Stefan. Training had taken place in our backyards, basements, garages, and virtually, during the lockdowns. Over time, thirteen (13) wonderful people had joined our training regime, leading to the idea of opening our very own karate school. Planning and preparation to open a brand new dojo had followed. Finally, when our paperwork was complete, the logo design finished and the business plan in focus, Amherstburg Karate Club was now official.
On Tuesday, August 17, 2021, at 6:00 p.m., our first class was set in motion. Now, Amherstburg Karate Club is fully operational, having three (3) age-group classes, twice weekly, with extra days on the weekends in the spring, summer and fall
We have something for everyone at AKC
AKC is a traditional Meibukan Goju-Ryu karate school that values respect, self-discipline and perseverance. We provide a positive, enthusiastic environment for students to strive for continuous improvement.
Our unique feature is that we offer authentic Karate directly from Okinawa, Japan, which is the birthplace of the martial arts. This ensures that what you or your child is being taught is authentic and pure Karate right from the source.
In our dojo, we teach traditional karate, which is considered a way of life as well as a method of self-defence. The term “Go-Jyu” is translated as “Go” meaning hard and “Jyu” meaning soft. Go-Jyu-Ryu was one of the first three styles of karate to be recognized formally. It was the first to be officially named. This style of Karate emphasizes the importance of personal development through discipline, honour, integrity, and commitment.

We have something for everyone at AKC
We have our child learning at the AKC for a full two years. He loves it. Family oriented place. They really take care of the kids there and teach them well. The price is good. And if anything happens and they have to cancel a class, they do a makeup one asap. It’s worth the time and effort.
I love AKC, Family Oriented, they treat you as if you are a part of the Meibukan karate family. They are experience and knowledgeable in Martial Arts.
So happy I decided to put my son into Amherstburg karate club. Sensei Mathew is great with the kids while he keeps us parents giggling throughout the class. He engages everyone. Sensei Chad I love how firm he is, this lets the kids know to take him seriously.
One of the biggest mental benefits of martial arts is its ability to improve self-esteem and boost confidence.
